Weekend of Wind Down

Weekend of Wind Down

Chris and Michelle got their house in Colton on the market last weekend so this weekend the lake called a little stronger than other weekends this summer.

Saturday was an afternoon spent at the lake with dinner in the boat from the shipwreck and a semi early night home. Sunday was another early return with a nice lunch of BLT’s. The 18 foot trailer arrived with the burn barrel to help get some cleanup going.

Weather

It was sunny, in the mid 80’s with variable winds mostly low from the southeast.

Fathers Day Fun

Fathers Day Fun

Fathers day started with Michelle, William and Margaret arriving first, getting some food unloaded and Chris arriving later. The kids beelined strait for the water after sunscreen and were having a great time when the Koch’s arrived.

The kochs arrived with excitement and more water was the destination for the kids. The Dad’s utilized Kelly’s side by side and moved walk ways into position. Baby Oliver got some outside time with Mom under the umbrella, which seemed to make for some good sleepy times. Arlo helped dad’s move pieces by being the official horn honker for the side by side.

Lunch was cooked up: hot dogs, chips and fruit. After lunch Will & Elsie wanted to go for a tube ride. This was the first solo tube ride for them together and they did great behind the jetski! The younger kids napped while the tubing took place.

During tubing Grandpa Doug called and wanted to put the boat in the water so Kelly & Chris ran across the lake and helped him launch it and got it on the lift.

After even MORE tubing there was a storm across the lake resulting in lightening and a pause to water activities while dinner was made.

Brats were grilled and boiled in beer and onions served with kraut and fixings, slow cooker potatoes and the rest of the essentials.

Dinner was followed by more tubing, jet ski rides for Arlo and Margaret and then clean up and bath time before everyone departed.

Weather

It was sunny, in the low 80’s with variable winds mostly low from the west, shifting to from the north east by evening.

Chris arrived in the late afternoon and worked on the water. He removed well pipe back to where the last coupling was originally installed about 2 feet below the surface of the sand. He installed new pipe to the pump from there. A new 1HP pump was installed and the water seems to be working quite well now with no air intrusion or delay on start up.

Chris also mowed the yard and moved the walkways as close to the beach as he could as well as pulling the jetski lift to the beach.

Weather

It was sunny, in the upper 80’s with a light breezer out of the north.

Monday Movement

Monday Movement

Chris arrived after work to attempt to fix the water pump leakage with some new parts. Being unsuccessful a trip was made to Menards to fetch a new, simpler pump that was more like the old one. Unfortunately fittings were all purchased in 1.5 inch instead of 1.25 inch so a return trip to menards meant time ran out on the pump project today. Another day.

Weather

It was mostly sunny, in the low 90’s with a strong wind out of the south that faded to a light easterly breezey by evening.

Sunday Splashes

Sunday Splashes

Chris ran to Colton this morning to build a roof for the pump house, did so, strapped it to the small trailer and met Michelle, William and Margaret out at the lake around 1:30.

The kids at some Dairy Queen prior upon arrival and then set about getting sun screened and into the water/onto the beach. Chris worked to level the 4 4×4 posts that the top of the pump house would have to sit on as best he could. With Michelle’s help while the kids played they got the pump house top on.

The kids enjoyed the beach and water all afternoon. The carp were spawning in the shallows and put on quite a show. Chris fired the grill up and got it good and hot to get rid of any post-flood funkies. After setting the east wall of the parking pad and getting the rest of the dock tops on he grilled burgers and hot dogs while Michelle finished raking the beach and cutting up watermelon.

After dinner the kids played for a little while longer then picked up the beach and headed in. Baths were done at the lake as the water heater at the house in Madison was not working. After baths and cleanup everyone headed for Madison.

Weather

Warm, Humid early and mostly sunny, low 70s for a high. Winds from the southwest changing to north/northeast.

Aquatic Emanations

Aquatic Emanations

Chris got an early start after making a trip to Campbell’s supply and Colton for parts (he forgot some in Colton, naturally). After getting some work done until about 1 Michelle and the kids arrived with a picnic lunch. Work continued on the pump house into the afternoon with start up around 4 after Michelle made a quick trip back to town for 1 inch PVC pipe. A new type of sediment filter was tried this year, so far so good.

The pump took prime easily and filled the house/water heater quickly. After getting to pressure it kicked off but appeared to lose prime somewhat before next kick in, taking a few minutes to start pushing water and filling the lines with air in the mean time. Several items were checked and tightened but the culprit for losing prime was not found. One big leak was identified and not fixed on the pump. Both toilets are having issues filling, the back one never shuts off the front one fills VERY slowly.

The kids played on the beach and in the water until they could barely stand. Margaret skipped nap time for more water time.

Dinner was ordered for carry out from the Hillside. Burgers, chicken strips and chislic. After dinner everything was picked up and covered for rain storms tonight and in the morning and the Uthe’s headed for home.

Weather

Very Warm, Humid and mostly sunny, mid 70s for a high. Calm to semicalm winds from the South.

Pump House Hijinx

Pump House Hijinx

Chris spent most of the afternoon in Colton cutting up 4×4, 2×4 and decking boards to make the skeleton of a pump house. He then brought the pieces along with almost all the plumbing fittings he needed to set up the new pump house. Instead of hiding the pump under the trailer the new plan is to have it above the possible flood water in a seperate pump house at the end of the trailer.

After making some progress Chris got a migrane and retreated to Madison for dinner and some recovery. Chris, Michelle, William and Margaret all returned after dinner to keep going on the project.

New Dave provided some suggestions and tools for removing the broken PVC from the bladder tank and Chris and Michelle got the basics of the pump house put together, noting the few fittings Chris would need the next day.

William and Margaret played on the beach and splashed and stomped their rain boots in the lake. On the way out the two sections of walk way that were still missing were noted as found on the pile by the feed lot from the flood cleanup so those will make their way back home soon.

William and Margaret both voiced their preference to stay and not go home. Sadly with no water, no gas and no AC the family was trotted home.

Weather

Warm, Humid and cloudy, upper 60s for a high. Calm winds from the South.

A Holiday Approaches

A Holiday Approaches

Chris brought out a new 3/4 HP well pump, a new sediment filter and some landscaping materials. 65 eight foot green treated 5×5 landscape timbers to create a parking pad and a lower bound for the new skirting.

Lance had come by with the barge and put the dock and boat lift in. Chris found the two poles for the piece of walk way that goes up to the dock but the walkway itself is still MIA so we will likely have to build a new one. The old one had nice decking on it but was not made of green treat and had rotted pretty quickly.

What grass is left will need to be trimmed and the walk way pieces sorted back out and put down the sand. The Jetski lift is still in the yard as well.

Weather

Mid 60’s a breeze out of the northwest. Very cloudy, occasional spits of rain with 100% humidity all day.

September to Now

September to Now

We’ve had a time warp. On September 9th 2019 the lake flooded. I’ll post pictures of the actual flood but for now here is where we sit.

We’ve gotten a new meter and box from Sioux Valley electric so we now have access to 200 AMP electrical service and the trailer has power for the first time since September.

I fired up the sewage lift pump and it did run (thankfully) but did not turn off (sadly). The Sanitary district comes tomorrow to take a look.

The water pump is a goner, as is the AC condenser, plans are underway to future-flood-proof both replacements.

The deck survived fine, just lost the remaining lumber to finish it, no big deal to get replacement.

The house itself fared OK, the water got high enough to pull down the insulation and belly plastic, as well as destroy some vents. We’ll have to address all of that this spring. The skirting is destroyed, though I’m not losing sleep over that. I loaded up the skirting and took it to Colton to dispose of it.

The grass is very rough, as is the beach.

Plans are forming for repair and rebuild. Hopefully soon we’ll have more work to share.

One moment of excitement: a cow got out from the feed lot on the way down to the lake and I kept more from getting out and kept the one that did get out in place until Tim & Lori came and got it back in and repaired the fence.

Weather

Cool and cloudy, mid 50’s for a high. Calm winds.
